Acne can cause healthy tissue around it to be destroyed. In an attempt to repair the tissue, new collagen is formed. Occasionally, too much collagen is formed and this causes raised or hypertrophic scarring. More often than not, depressed or atrophic scars form because of a lack of tissue.

The diagram above shows us the varous types of scars.

• Ice Pick: Deep, less than 2mm across
• Boxcar: Vertical edges, angular, deep or superficial
• Rolling: Wide, shallow, wave-like
• Hypertrophic: Raised, lumpy, keloid-like

Ways to fix Acne scars

1. Chemical Reconstruction of Skin Scars treatment

   • Also known as the "CROSS" treatment, this involves the use of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) to stimulate collagen formation for the depressed scars.

2. Fractional Ablative Laser

   • An effective laser for acne scarring as it causes ablation of the top laer of skin and stimulates collagen in the deeper layers of skin.

3. Fractional Radiofrequency

   • The treatment causes coagulation of deeper tissues, thereby resurfacing skin.
